Ponderings 12/19

1. Dentist X-Rays - I always used to hate going to the dentist to get X-rays. They make you bite on the most uncomfortable things. This week I got dental x-rays for the first time in like 6 years and found that they have not improved the x-ray process at all. Someone needs to invent a better of way of taking those x-rays.

2. Before pictures: The other day I was pondering about life without cameras and pictures. If you wanted to remember something you had to keep it all in your head and then if you were remembering something and wanted to show someone you ha.

3. People love costumes. Costumes make everything more fun. Santarchy perfect example.

4. Most of us all know how to read and we have been able to read since we were 4ish. Yet when someone says they read books everybody automatically goes "wow they must be smart". If you don't believe me, the next time someone mentions they were reading a book look at people's reaction to the comment.

5. I hate emoticons.
Some rules about emoticons everyone should follow:
A. Only one emoticon should be used if any in an email.
B. During a chat you do not need to use an emoticon unless your emotion is changing. If you already smiling I know that you don't need to smile at me again. If you are frowning then fine frown and.
C. By using an emoticon it does not automatically mean that I need to accept your statement or that your statement is polite. For example: "Can you solve the problem :)" You are still making me solve the problem and you smiling is not helping me solve the problem.

Ponderings 12/5/2010

This week's ponderings brings together Thanksgiving and the beginning of December.

1. Thanksgiving Vacation is a tease for everyone. - I used to thing Thanksgiving break was just a tease for college student because people would get to go home for a weekend and when they come back they would realize they had a couple weeks of hell and finals until winter break. However, the same holds for the corporate world as soon as people come back from Thanksgiving weekend everybody keeps talking about vacation and counting down the days until their planned holiday. My suggestion is move Thanksgiving to October like Canada or move Thanksgiving to the first Thursday of November. Or make Thanksgiving on Decmber 18th and give everybody Dec 18th - Jan 2nd Off.

2. Subway doors: Why don't subway stations and subways have stop requested buttons. I know in most cases every subway stop has people wanting to enter or people wanting to get off but on a lot of late night trains a lot of stops don't have people and the trains unnecessarily stop. Make people request the stop to get off.

3. Whenever driving on hills I always wonder how many accidents happen when people slide slightly down a hill before going forward.

4. What happens to Thanksgiving if Turkeys become an endangered species? How many pounds of Turkey are thrown away each year?

5. If you are only an Internet Company why wait till Cyber Monday to have your best deals?

6. Cell Phone Carriers should advertise in all spots where another network doesn't have service. For example I keep going places where AT&T has no service. Verizon should have big sign there reminding me that Verizon does have coverage there.

7. Ice Skating rings need to put up signs "don't text while skating"

Ponderings 11/21/2010

1. Bus Seating - After tons of bus trips over the last few months I have figured out how people sit.
Here is what goes through people's mind:
1. If you know a person you sit next to them or the closest seat next to them.
2. If there is a empty row of 2 seats you sit in the empty row.
3. Avoid homeless people.
4. Once all the empty rows are gone people do the following:
a. Find the person that is most similar to them. (Age, race, background)
Examples: Young people sit next to young people, People with Laptops sit next to others using laptops.
b. Only exception to a is people sit near (not next too) people they find attractive.
5. If other people are standing up people assume the back of the bus is also full and will also stand up.

2a. Treadmill Back Stopper - I know they have that clip that when stretched stops the treadmill but when you are sprinting on a treadmill and watching a game and decide to cheer there needs to be something to stop you from falling off the treadmill.

2b. Also on the subject of treadmills what is the proper way of running on a treadmill. I always feel like I am out running the treadmill because I hit the front handles while running. Are you supposed to run in the middle? How was the length of the treadmill determined?

3. Four Loko became more popular because it got banned. The government just made the best marketing move for Four Loko.

4. Karaoke places should have signs outside the singing rooms showing what people are singing inside. This way when you are singing Justin Bieber's new jam everybody will know.

5. They should extend mascots and name to include actual people. Philadelphia Alis, San Francisco Gandhis.

Fall Ponderings

Ponderings 11/14/2010

Day Light Savings:
1A. Why are places normally open at 2am allowed to close at 1:01 am on daylight savings?
Lets say I travel to SF and land at 1:59 am on daylight savings day. As I turn on my cell phone the time has turned back an hour to 1:00 am. I want to go club for an hour and think it is 1:01 am but the place is closed and I am given false hope.

1B. Why does Arizona not follow daylight savings? It makes no sense to me. Either other states should follow Arizona if daylight savings loses money or Arizona should join the rest of the States.

1C. Does day light savings actually work? Before Daylight savings it was dark until 7:20 am in Seattle and would get dark again around 5:30-6:00. With daylight savings we get from 6:20-4:30-5:00. Are more people awake between 6:00 pm - 7:20 am, or betweeb 5:00pm - 6:20 am? I keep hearing we do it for the farmers so then does Arizona not have farmers?

2. A la carte vs. A la mode - Why did we adopt these into English? Instead of "By itself or with ice cream?

3. Why is having a clean shave more formal than a beard or a little scruff?

4. Grocery store deals: Why are some deals 5 for $10 but you can buy only 1 and still get the deal but then other deals require you to get 5 for the deal.

5. Did Play Station just come out with the Wii remote 2 years late?

6. Expert picks: When you go to any sports site they will always have a section for expert picks. Who decides those reporters are experts? If any expert does not have a 65% or higher pick rate they should be removed from the expert pick section for a season.

Halloween Ponderings

10/30/2010 Ponderings:

1. You know you are in a fun city when your playing a game Seattle or Halloween and your usually not sure of your answer.

2. Type of Candy you give out reveals your Halloween personality- Ask somebody kind of candy they are giving out for trick or treat and you will learn a lot about them.
Here are the categories and insights:
A. "Huh Halloween? O crap." - Never remembers any holiday and will most likely be handing out pencils or apples when kids ring doorbell.
B. "I will not be home." - Doesn't enjoy interacting with kids and will rather spend time hiding at gym than buying and handing out candy. If someone can guilt this person into giving candy then there will be a box of candy outside the house and the person will keep the lights off.
C. ' I need to go on a Grocery Store Trip" - This person wants to celebrate Halloween and will make sure to grab some candy from the grocery store but will most likely have a non-creative Costume Store costume.
D. " I am handing out the rejects from my trick or treating last year" - This is someone who understands the joys of trick or treating being able to get free candy and then being able to hand out the stuff you don't like next year.
E."Bought several bags full of candy" - These people have carved pumpkins outside, tons of Halloween decorations and are known as the hot spots for trick or treating.

3. Trick or treating is really fun. Why do people stop trick or treating when they get older? Everybody should continue trick or treating.

4. On Halloween look around at other people's costumes and find one you like or use them to think of an idea of your own. Then the day after haloween buy your next year's costume and candy. You may not want to trick or treat at my house.

5. What is proper etiquette for repeating costumes? If you decide to go big and be Gene Simmons for example from Kiss that requires a lot of work and probably money. Next year are you allowed to bring this back? What should be the rules? My opinion is you are allowed to repeat if new crowd, if you become known for that costume, if you build something more onto the costume, or if it has been 3 years.

10/16/10

Ponderings 10/16/19

1. What is Techron - I was at a Chevron Gas station yesterday and in each category of gas it had the
"With Techron" sign. WTH is techcron? And if it was something cool why do they not sell a gas category without it and a gas category with it.

2A. Fast Food - Why no tip field on Receipt - Whenever you go to coffee shops or food places like Qdoba, if you pay with credit card then you have to sign a receipt where the owners have conveniently placed a tip field. Why doesn't Taco Bell and other fast food places add this to there receipts to get more Tips. There are enough people who tip anytime they see the field. BTW no one should ever tip at a food/coffee place without a waiter.

3. Costco Samples - Costco should advertise what they will be sampling each day. People would change their schedules to get a sample of something good. Like imagine waking up on Saturday and you see that Costco is sampling chocolate almonds, guacamole and chips, and cheese. Everybody would go to costco that day.

4. Bikers vs. Cars - I don't think anyone actually understands bike vs. car laws on streets. What would happen if I made a car that was operated by peddling? Am I treated as a car or bike? Am I allowed to go on the sidewalk or not? Am I allowed to go on the highway?

5. Football could make pre-season more exciting by adding new rules for each week. Check out this pre-season schedule:
Week 1: 6 downs to get 20 yards.
Week 2: No Punting allowed
Week 3: No Huddle entire game.

6. Why did the school bus concept never grow to Work bus concept? I know some companies offer buses but I wonder why more don't. All popular neighborhoods should have work buses that help people get to work. BTW I just learned the plural form of bus is buses. I always thought it was busses.

Ponderings 10/9/10

Ponderings for the week of 10/9:

1.Being punctual is not efficient. - Every time I show up on time to a meeting it takes at least 5-10 minutes before all the necessary people come and the meeting can start. I think companies should implement passing periods like high school.

2. Keyboard Design - The proper way of typing tells you start with your fingers on asdf and jkl; why the hell was it designed so that the ; gets a starting position? I still don't fully know the proper use of the ; (semicolon) character.

3. Rush Hour - We call it rush hour but it is the time with the most traffic when you go the slowest the name should be slow hour.

4. I still don't know how we are supposed to say this year. Like do we refer to it as o-ten, ten, twenty-ten. Someone please make a stance and popularize it.

5. Airplane Water - Every time I order airplane water I get screwed. If you order water with no specifics you get water with 3/4 ice, 1/4 water. If you say no ice they give you warm water. Second, how come if people are getting a can of soda you still only get a glass of water. As a result of this every time I am on a plane I order 2-3 drinks at a time.

6. Gym etiquette - What is the proper gym etiquette for looking in the mirror in between sets at the gym. You finish a set and you look in the mirror and you see all these people staring at you via the mirror.
6A. Are you supposed to acknowledge them in the mirror, or turn around and acknowledge them in person?

6B. Next what is proper etiquette for staring. Usually people say you should not stare at people in person but are you allowed to if it is through a mirror?

Ponderings 10/1/2010

My "Ponderings for the week" 10/1/2010

1. Why do toilet seat covers have the sliver in the middle that you need to remove before you can use the toilet seat cover?

1A. Why do we use toilet seat covers at all? If the seat was wet the thin cover will not do anything and there is no proof that they help avoid bacteria.

2. Why would anyone who could be a firefighter become a cop? No one likes cops and everybody loves firefighters. Or to be more fair Everybody loves firefighters but people are mixed about cops.

3. Why the hell does February have 28 days? We have 7 months with 31 days, 4 with 30 and 1 with 28. It could have been 7 months with 30 and 5 months with 31. With leap year making 6 months of 30 and 6 months of 31.

4. Why don't busses have seat belts? Is it just so the people standing feel as safe as the people sitting down.

5. Does baseball realize by the time Late July, August, September come around, the time when most people are free, most teams are already out of playoff contention because only 4 teams can make the playoffs per League?

6. Don't people get pissed off when using an automatic sink and the temperature is too hot and you have no idea what to do?
